A Piece Of The Cement Ceiling Fell On Him In Police Detention
posted (April 15, 2024)
A family wants answers after their loved one was detained over the weekend for questioning, only to be severely injured while in police custody. The family of Japhet Bennet claims that he was picked up by GI3 police from their home on Friday morning and taken to the Queen's street police station for questioning in relation to a murder. While in custody the family was told that a piece of the ceiling broke off, fell on Bennet while he was asleep and injured his leg, and none of them were informed of what happened. His sister came to speak with us this evening and here's what she shared about their frustrations regarding their brother and the police.

Voice of: Tennecia Lanza, Sister of Detainee
"On Friday morning at 5 a.m., a mirage of police officers came to his house with his girlfriend and his kids and they took him, stated that it was GI3 and took them because they said that was for murder investigation."

"But we went to the police station and told us that is was because of, well we had a lot of misinformation. They said it was for SOE, then another said that it was questioning about the murder. So today we were there this afternoon and they were like, they're taking him up for a SOE now, being the fact that he was already locked up for like over 48 hours, like way pass 48 hours without a charge stating anything."

"He got injured at the, cellblock at Queen Street police station. and no one reached out to his family pertaining anything. We had to get contact from a family member that was at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital stating that he was injured and the entire ceiling from the cell block fell on him."

"He literally has no feeling in one of his foot. The family wants to know what's the reason and they took him to prison today and he's injured. So we want to know why the reason why they took him because we are trying to get answers, but nobody is reaching is reaching out to us pertaining anything with Japhet Bennet."

"So we the family just want to know because he is injured over 48 hours. Nobody said nothing. He get injured and they had to drag him out on a cardboard box, cause he couldn't even move. Bear in mind one of the cellmates said that they have to wake him up with water."

"So just imagine how severe this was. And nobody told us anything, when I called the precinct they said, we don't have any contacts for his family, but come on they know where Japhet mother lives or the house that they took him from they could have went back to say okay Japhet Bennet is in the hospital. No one reached out stated anything pertaining to Japhet Bennet."

The family says that if they do not get answers regarding Bennet's detainment they will seek legal action.

The police today told us it was just a small chunk of cement which became detached and hit him.
