Mose Tells ComPol To Stay In Law Enforcement Lane, Not Play Politics
posted (May 7, 2024)
Switching now to politics...

He holds one of the most important roles in the public sector as commissioner of police. And though he often switches hats from Compol to car salesman, Chester Williams told us recently that he would entertain the idea of throwing another hat in the ring, the political one that is.

But not everyone supports the idea of a "campaigning compol".

On this morning's broadcast of Wake up Belize on X TV, host Mose Hyde criticized the Compol for even thinking of pursuing a political path while still holding the title of compol.

And so we asked the commissioner today for his thoughts on Hyde's comments about his his possible political ambitions:

Mose Hyde, Host, WUB
"But the responsibility of the Commissioner, while you are Commissioner, whatever your plans are after being Commissioner, you have your right to your plans. But you can't be the Commissioner of Police and, you know, like..."

Host
"Run for public office?"

Mose Hyde, Host, WUB
"Well, he's not announced, but that can't be on your mind."

Host
"Right."

Mose Hyde, Host, WUB
"And so I feel like the only answer the Commissioner could give is, that is not on my mind. Like that, you know, what happens after I am Commissioner, what I pursue after this, when I will retire or whatnot. Those are things which will happen. But right now, I'm the Commissioner of Police, which means that my hands full."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I don't know what would cause Mose Hyde to say that. I have not said that I am running for office. I have not said that. And as a Belizean, I have a right to think, like any other person. When Mr. Aragon was Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aragon remained Deputy Commissioner of Police up to the time he went into convention for the Orange Walk East constituency."

"Nobody criticized him then for jumping into the political arena. Because he did not only declared himself, but he went to the extent of going into a convention, winning that convention, and it was after he won the convention that he resigned from police."

"But nobody said that he needed to resign. I have not offered myself a political office. Yes, I said that I am contemplating it. I have not said that I will be with this or that political party. I can be speaking of running independent. Who knows?"
