Immigration officer Saul Lisbey has been officially placed on interdiction effective today. This is after he pushed down a woman waiting in line at the Benque Viejo border station one week ago.
The 48 year old - who has been in the department for 13 years - was also criminally charged for wounding the woman who he threw down.
The National Trade Union Congress of Belize put out a statement today saying it is, quote, "outraged and appalled by the recent incident of violence against a woman by a Senior Immigration Officer at the Western Border. The NTUCB strongly condemns all forms of violence against women and urges all frontline public officers to exercise professionalism and restraint when delivering service to the Public.
The NTUCB is calling upon the Ministry of Public Service….(to) take swift action against the offending officer."
The sternly worded statement concludes, quote, "It is unacceptable that a public officer, entrusted with the responsibility of serving the public, can resort to violence against a woman. We demand that the Ministry takes immediate action to address this incident and ensure that it does not happen again in the future."
Well, the CEO of the Ministry said yesterday they are prioritizing customer service, public relations and conflict resolution training. And, more importantly, they've activated a complaints hotline. If you have any adverse experience at immigration, you're urged to Whatsapp: 610-2143 or direct dial 828-5213 - both during working hours. Alternately you can email customer.service@immigration.gov.bz
