City Promises Another Revolution In Transportation With E-Taxis
posted (May 14, 2025)
Belize City's push toward greener public transportation started 10 months ago with the launch of e-buses. Now, with more help from the UNDP, the City Council is adding another electric option.

Today, they unveiled four new E-Taxis as part of their Smart City initiative. Jomarie Lanza has the story.

You will soon see them up and running in the city, and similar to the E buses, persons in need of a ride will have to use an app to get it. Depending on where you are going in the city that can cost you anywhere between $6-10 dollars, but according to the mayor the experience of traveling in one of these E taxis is worth every dollar.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor
"As you know we have a broad vision of really driving modern transportation systems within the scope of our city. sS this again ties in as we continue to build out that ecosystem. As you know last year we had launched the E-buses and as part of that project independently of course with the Belize City council, this project really put in place the sort of additional component needed to really have us realise our ambition of a greener, cleaner less pollution, less noise pollution, less emissions in the air. And so we felt it would be important for us to be the catalyst the sort of ignition for this project."

"It was sourced through a bank loan and we did that from in 2020, early 2024 and we have completely paid that loan already, it was for 223k to acquire the 4 E-Taxis."

No more waiting on corners in the sun for hours on end, or running the security risk of trying to catch a ride home late at night. You can simply request a ride using the "Mi Driva" App.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor
"Well the service utilises a sort of technology that mirrors the uber lift that you find in some of the other modern countries where you use this system to really communicate with the driver. You would book your ride. You would pay, it has a cashless payment option but it also allows you to pay cash if you want, you track your driver as he or she progresses towards you and you get in the vehicle and enjoy the clean ride."

But while the vehicles are in the lot, don't start booking your ride yet, the service will not be active until the end of the week.
