And speaking of obscure laws, a new Magistrates Court went to the house on Monday which aims to completely overhaul the legal framework governing the country's lower courtsâ€"specifically the Magistrate Courts, also known as the inferior courts.
Government officials say the bill is intended to modernize and streamline how justice is delivered at the lower court level, ensuring greater efficiency, consistency, and access to justice for the average Belizean.
IT will also get rid of these outdated laws:
Francis Fosneca, PUP - Freetown:
"There are many outdated laws on the law books that are tried in the magistrates court. Take for instance currently we still find offenses in the summary jurisdiction offenses act. Offence of wandering in any public place or street to collect arms. The offense of emptying any night soil or other offensive matter between the hours of 4-9 pm. The offense of annoying persons by playing at games. The offense of impeding foot passengers. The offense of wantonly ringing a doorbell. The offense of washing animals in the street. The offense of sending false telegrams to name a few".
"You may have seen in the news a while back for instance the gentleman charged with a very odd offense when he was found riding with a five gallon water container on his bike. So this bill seeks to do away with things like this is Mr. Speaker."
The bill was tabled on Monday.
