Legalize it - many have made that call for marijuana before - but now a Caye Caulker Village Councillor is circulating a petition to do it - but only on the island.
That Councillor has launched a drive to collect 400 signatures from registered voters in Caye Caulker in hopes that it can trigger a referendum for GOB to legalize and regulate cannabis on the island.
Now, of course, we don't generally just have legislation carved out for portions of the country but Councillor ilya Rosado told us why they decided to pursue this initiative.
Ilya Rosado, Councilor, Caye Caulker Village Council:
"There has been some negative feedback and that's fine. Everyone in the community has their right to criticize this initiative, to criticize me for pushing this initiative. But most of the feedback has been surprisingly positive. I actually did not expect to get the amount of signatures that I got today."
"We are almost at... so we need four hundred signatures in total and for the first day we are almost at two hundred. I want people have their rights. I want people to be able to express themselves and decide if they want to consume a certain substance when they are old enough and responsible enough. I want them to be able to make that choice. If you don't want to smoke weed that's fine because i don't drink. And I am not going around saying alcohol should be legal."
"If someone enjoys having a whiskey at the end of the day that's perfectly fine. Anything in excess will be bad but what I want is for people to have the freedom in this community the make that choice if they want to. Just like they have the freedom to buy a beer if they want and that's it.That is my personal perspective."
"From the council's perspective, they want to see if we can use this opportunity to create a better economic environment but we want the people to decide on whether this is the right way not and we'll see. If the people decide yes or no that is their choice and we are here to follow what they believe is right and that's it."
They hope to collect the 400 signatures by Saturday…
