Basketball is a fan favorite in the cities and towns, but finding a formula to keep spectators, owners and players happy and in balance has proved challenging. That's why the governing league for elite basketball has gone through multiple iterations. And now there is another, the Belize Premier Basketball League - whose season launches tomorrow.
It's set up by the former owners of the Belize Hurricanes Basketball Team, which is a former champions in the Belize Estate Basketball League
The CEO and the Commissioner of the league spoke at a press conference today:
Gilbert Gordon, CEO BPBL:
"Now, May 16th just a day away is the launch of a new Basketball League, the dawn of a new era."
Gilbert Gordon, CEO BPBL:
"I said to them how would you feel, for us to be able to move away from the Belize hurricanes to sacrifice the Belize Hurricanes Franchise in order to ensure that for basketball continues in Belize, because apparently it seemed like we could not get the media to get off the ground. Every single director at that time agreed and voted yes for us to move forward with the League."
Gilbert Gordon, CEO BPBL:
"We I would say it is better for the league. We ensure that these businesses are covered. And we believe that for the next 10 to 15 years this is sustainable for the basketball league. Can balance and it's going to be managed by the board of directors."
Claudio Leal, Commissioner, BPBL:
"I must say that what what the audience and directors presented to me convinced me that this league was. It makes me try to take over the country, at least our vision for the next 3 to 5 years is that we will have to turn down our application for people wanting to be a part of the Premier Basketball League."
