In other news, if you needed a police record before - and didn't live in Belmopan - you'd have to travel far and wait endlessly to get it. Or pay a cop like a hundred dollars to do the legwork. But now, you can submit an application right at home.
The Ministries of Home Affairs and E-Governance have launched the new Online Criminal Records Registry system. Now with a few clicks, you can apply for your record and when it's ready, you'll get a notification and you can pick it up at a local police station.
Today the CEO in the E-Governance Ministry told us more via Zoom.
Jose Urbina, CEO, Ministry of E-Governance
"The police record is virtually needed for many application processes we have in Belize especially when applying for a job. And so as the E-Governance Department has been evolving, we identified high impact areas that can benefit the Belizean people and one of those services is the online application for the police record or as we are referring to it with the launch of the Criminal Record Registry whereby someone who needs, anyone who needs to apply for a police record can now do it online and have full access to the application and it's a secure website also whereby you submit your applications, there are documentations to submit and it's a simple process to follow."
"The process started early last year so we have been workin diligently with all stakeholders and in this case, the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries along with the police department in trying to document in the first place or first step the processes that need to be followed. We also identified the reengineering because what you do manually might not be the ideal things to do when you're digitizing so there was some optimization carried out there and then the software development. Along with the capacity building internally within the public service to create and sensitize the police department in terms of how this benefits the wider community and of course with the front end, you have a back end so there's a processing aspect that comes along and it's not a manual process that needs to be followed but at the end of the day some clicking for approvals are required until the final process is achieved."
"When you follow through with the application process, you have the option to upload certain documents that are required, for example the choice of ID, you select and in my case, when I follow the process, I selected the Social Security ID, and it gives me the option to also upload it as mandatory field because there needs to be some verification on the backend that, in my case, Jose Urbina is the person applying for that service. And likewise for example if you're married and you've stated in the application process, it requires the marriage certificate so there are 3 documents that are really requested as part of the process depending on your status for you to be able to process the application."
