In March of 2024 Richard Valerio, a resident of Punta Gorda Town was shot in his lower back by a police officer as a result of a personal dispute. Criminal charges were brought against the cop but it's been dragging through the court system with what the victim feels is a deliberate delay.
He says that he's been travelling back and forth from PG to Belmopan for 8 court appearances but every time he goes, it's only to find that the case has been adjourned. And all Valerio wants is for the officer to be held accountable for his actions.
Richard Valerio, Shot by a Police Officer
"Every time I reach it is either, he doesn't have a lawyer he is getting a new lawyer the attorney does not arrive, prosecutor does not come and every time I leave from Belmopan I have to pay over $200 just to get to PG, there is no I can't get any help so far and I know it is because it its a police officer I don't get any results as yet I know to myself that if it was me who shot the police, I would not be there 8 times going around and around adjourning the case, they would put me right away at the back I would be at Kolbe right now you know but it is all said and done, I need help from either the police officer or the media to go out and solve this and help me to get some assistance."
