The mayor says city cleanup efforts are happening both day and night. He explained the challenges sanitation teams face with illegal dumping that often happens under cover of darkness.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City
"As you know, that has been an ongoing exercise. Sometimes I think it Is an exercise in futility. We just need the cooperation of residents to take pride in their neighbourhood, to take pride in their community, Hotspots is not something desired, but it is a reality and we have to deal with. That reality, we have different areas in the city that as we go and clean, the night team goes out and clean. Next day, the people are dumping right there again. We have the enforcement team in place for illegal dumping and though we are very aggressively pursuing. How we can catch those violators that are dumping at those hotspots? But at the end of the day it requires a sort of commitment from the community from the families who live in those areas. You can't stand on the side and complain and say the city council is not picking up your garbage if it is you dumping your garbage there. Take some pride in your city, clean up your city that is very important."
