Here's What Deportees Went Through
posted (May 26, 2025)
We also asked Rosado about the deportees that arrived in the country last week - when his department turned the airport into a police zone.

But, is it fair to subject persons who may have overstayed their visas to such an elaborate police processing?

Rosado walked us through the process of what happens now that they are back in country.

Dr Richard Rosado, Commissioner of Police
"We must all we take advantage of the legal framework that is provided to us and chapter 97 of the laws of Belize some of the jurisdiction offence I believe it's section 55 does empower the commissioner of police to issue compliance letters. Now it does empower in an effort to ensure that there is a balance in terms of public safety, humane integration and social support for returning Belizeans. So that is integrated in the law and that has been happening for years if not decades but what concerns me is when the media tries to sensationalise the return of these Belizeans because majority of them are hard working Belizeans that went abroad to try to seek a better living and whenever the deportees would come into the country our officers would interview them to ensure that they have a family to return to to ensure that they have the necessary social structure to support their return to Belize and so there are many things that we interviewed them for and provide or connect them to the necessary services from the different government agencies so it is not to criminalise them but it is the media that has sensationalised their return which is sad because the drafter of the laws I believe their main intent was to ensure that when we do the interview that it's in terms of the human reintegration of these individuals."
