For a brief minute today, it seemed like there may be a way forward for the UDP - but by this evening, it became clear that the party will continue to wallow in the mire of division and infighting.
The hope came this morning when the First Deputy Leader Hugo Patt sent out the first press release we've ever seen attributed to him. In it, he asserts that he's the interim party leader. He says he directed the Acting Chairman, Alberto August to postpone the National Party Council scheduled for this Saturday. Of course, August refused, so Patt's press release is a plea to all NPC members to, quote, "NOT attend the purported meeting of the NPC..."
Well, in less than an hour Shyne Barrow - who still claims to be leader - sent out a legal notice from the Pitts law firm. It's directed to Hugo Patt and says, quote, "Whereas you continue to serve as the 1st Deputy Leader of the UDP, Hon. Dr. Barrow at all material times continues to be Leader of the UDP."
And if that didn't make you shake your head in weary disbelief, shortly after, acting chairman August sent his own missive to Patt saying, quote, "The current Leadership Executive of the Party will remain until a new Leadership Executive is installed at the National Convention." end quote. Just in case you wondered, that convention is scheduled for October. We'll see what happens next.
