11 Prison Officers Walk Off The Job, Dissatisfied With Barracks
posted (June 11, 2025)
Today 11 prison guards walked off the job at the Belize Central Prison. They did so in protest of living conditions at the officers barracks. They say they are dissatisfied with the conditions in the barracks where there is limited nth-time access to water and a dispute over lockers.

The CEO of the prison Virgilio Murillo says it's a dispute over petty stuff, mostly that none of the officers want to sleep[in the top bunks.

He says the walk off did not affect prison operations today. He says since they walked off, if they want back their jobs - they will have to write a letter of apology.

Workers say as many as 15 of them walked off and that they have been systematically mistreated and also told that overtime shifts will be cut back.
