And that outcome may be owing in part to meetings and consultations like today's one at the Biltmore on the Draft National Plan of Action for illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. It helps to keep the fisheries department on the alert to prevent more of these illegal fishing schemes from happening. We spoke with one of the presenters who gave us more details.

Mauro Gongorga, Belize Fisheries Department, Fisheries Officer
"We are holding a consultation on the draft National Plan of Action to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in Belize and this workshop is being financed by the technical cooperation funds of the Inter-American Development Bank."

"The idea is to bring together various stakeholders that are involved in fisheries law enforcement in Belize including our development partners, our conservation partners as well and what we are looking at is two different strategies, we are looking at deterrence by interception and application of law and by that we have various activities that we are engaged in. We want to look at for example the training of our officers in terms of how to effectively enforce fisheries laws, we also want to improve on the reporting and documentation of enforcement activities and of course we want to create the information that is available for us to report to our international, national, and regional partners and we also want to acquire the capacity in terms of equipment, materials so that we can effectively carry out enforcement activities to ensure the sustainability, long term sustainability of our fisheries resources in Belize."
