In the quiet village of Copper Bank, tradition met technology on the water on Saturday. Thirteen hand-carved cayucos sliced through the bay in a spirited race - but this wasn't just about who paddled fastest.
Behind the race was a digital leap forward. Boat captains were invited to download an e-logbook app, part of a new initiative by the World Wildlife Fund and the Belize Fisheries Department to replace paper logbooks with a streamlined, app-based system.
The app sign-up opened the door for captains to join the race, creating the perfect blend of outreach and engagement on familiar waters. Freelance Reporter Jose Sanchez reports.
The first place team consisted of Valdir Santoya and Leovani Tun.
The Belize Audubon Society, which works closely with fishers from Copper Bank and Chunox in the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, provided critical support - bridging relationships and making it possible for WWF to host this successful event.
