And as Minister of Immigration, we asked Musa about Ruben Manolo Requena, the immigration officer charged with extortion following an investigation into an alleged $6,000 shakedown at Big Creek Port.
Musa confirmed that he was placed on administrative leave:
Reporter:
"Has that officer been placed on leave?"
Kareem Musa:
"Yes, he has."
Reporter:
"Would you be able to give us any details about that?"
Kareem Musa:
"The situation with that particular officer... it concerned the importation of fuel, if you recall, down at the Big Creek port of entry. And there is an allegation that has been made by a member of that crew that brought in the fuel that, in fact, an attempt was made to extort him. And so that is the reason why charges had to be levied."
Reporter:
"What do you think about that complaint, and are you pleased with the charges that have been brought forth?"
Kareem Musa:
"I am still guided by the principle that I had when I was Minister of Home Affairs, which is no nonsense. As you recall, when I was Minister of Home Affairs, whether it was abuse or corruption, we discharged many officers-I believe over 150 officers during my time as Home Affairs. And so it's very important that the public receive the type of professional services from our public officers. And so we want to keep that very high standard, and if it ever rears its head again, we will take swift action."
