Mexican Vice Minister In Belize

Ambassador Luis Alfonso De Alba, the Mexican Vice Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean, was in Belize today for several events in both Belize City and Belmopan.

We start first with the ceremonies at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. You'll remember that years ago, the Mexican Government donated 5 Million US dollars for the construction of a Sports Center on the compound. It's supposed to be a state-of-art- indoor Basketball and Volleyball facility.

The project is being overseen by the UNOPS, which cuts out the possibility of any local deal cutting and kickbacks to favored contractors. After all, this kind of "pork-barrel" hustling is why Marion Jones still hasn't been completed after over a decade of construction and tens of millions of dollars invested.

But, while an international oversight mechanism prevents that type of activity, also has it's own red tape. The UNOPS experts had told us last year that the facility should have been completed this month. Well, construction still hasn't started, and today, the Mexican Vice Minister and the UNOPS experts held an unveiling to renew their commitment to see this facility built at the Marion Jones.
