And while Gill claims that Vasquez left and went to pick up his mother
who brought her gun – she denies that. Debbie Vasquez told us this evening
that she was with her son the entire the time and she had her gun. She says
if anyone pulled a gun, it was one of the passengers in Gill’s van.
Debbie Vasquez, Mother of Accused
“No that did not happen. Nothing like that went on.”
Keith Swift,
So what happened?
Debbie Vasquez,
“Me, my son, and his girlfriend were in my vehicle driving and this
guy was tailgating my son and then my son asked him why and he got out and started
cussing my son and they went back and forth. So my son called the police and
told them he had a problem and we called the police, my son called the police
several times, about 6 or 7 times. And the police finally arrived and when they
came, one came from one side and one came from the other side, and this guy
just came out of nowhere and said my son pulled a gun. I did have my licensed
gun on me and at no time did my son touch my gun or I touched my gun.”
Keith Swift,
But why did you guys follow him to his house?
Debbie Vasquez,
“I wouldn’t say follow him, because we had called the police
about the incident, we just wanted to make sure that when the police came, we
knew where the guy was.
This guy seemed to have what looked like a gun to us. I had my gun and
you know Keith, I am not a violent person. Two times I used my licensed firearm
and that was when they broke into my house, 2003 or something and the second
one when they robbed me of my chain, this very chain that I have on. That was
the only two times and I think I had all right to do it, anybody else would
have. Again I think on the part of the police this is just a personal issue
and they are making it an issue out of nothing.”
Bert Vasquez, who also goes by the name Bert Haylock was today also
charged with two counts of obtaining property by deception. It turns out that
he was wanted in 2007 when he allegedly cashed bogus checks at the 88 Shopping
Center. The store’s owner 40 year old Jose Chau had reported to police
that Vasquez asked him to cash a check from Timex Investment Group for $300
for him. The check was made out to Bert Haylock, not Vasquez. Later that day
a female similarly went to 88 Shopping Center and asked Chau to cash a check
for Timex Investment Group for $750. Chau also cashed that and both of them
bounced.
It turns out that Timex International is allegedly owned by Vasquez.
In court today Vasquez told Magistrate Sharon Frazer that he has tried to repay
88 Shopping Center but the owner refused to accept the money. Bail was denied
and he was remanded to the Hattieville Prison until June 2nd.
