And other epic legal battle is paying out in the Chief Justice’s courtroom
and again the principals are the Belize Bank on one side and the government
of Belize on the other. The Belize Bank is represented by British Q.C. Vincent
Nelson and Andrew Marshalleck from Barrow and Company, while Lois Young Barrow
and Priscilla Banner are representing the government.
It is epic because the bank is arguing that the Central Bank’s board
of appeal appointed by the Minister of Finance– cannot be impartial because
the minister appointed them. Of course, the question is if the minister cannot
appoint such a board, then who else has the authority to do so? Arguments have
been ongoing for two days but were abruptly adjourned today when government’s
lead counsel Lois Young Barrow fell suddenly ill. Closing arguments for both
sides are expected to continue tomorrow.
