Angry Mother Attempts Courthouse Assault
posted (August 13, 2008)

Today there was quite a scene at the Magistrate’s Court as a mother was outraged because she felt a gunman was setting up her son to take the rap. It happened before noon when it seems this mother could not contain herself as she saw her son Shane Young about to be remanded for firearm possession. Young was one of four men inside a Kia Sportage when police found a loaded 38 pistol. The search was made last night around 8:30 as the SUV was parked on Vernon Street near Cox Tire Shop. 3 adults were inside. They are the said Shane Young, 20 year old Stephen Flowers seen here in a black and white shirt on screen left, and 19 year old Christopher Sosa in the black tank top. They were along with a 17-year-old assistant accountant of Park Avenue.

Under new gun laws, regardless of who owns the weapon anyone inside the vehicle when the gun is found is considered part of a joint enterprise. And today in court if one of the four accused, identified as was expected to take the rap for the gun and plead guilty leaving the others to go. But that was not the case, as all four pleaded not guilty and under the new gun laws any person caught in possession of a firearm automatically goes to jail. Bail is not an issue anymore for the court prosecutor. And that’s what provoked the sudden attack by the Shane Young’s mother.

It is not certain who young’s mother tried to grab when attacked the four men who were being placed inside the police vehicle but shouted at one of them that he knew the gun was his, and because he refuses to plead guilty, her son has to go to jail for it. She also grabbed at the men, but was restrained by a policeman who was escorting the 4 accused. Their case was adjourned for September 9, when they are expected back in court #1.

We understand that the office of the DPP had been contacted since 20-year-old Stephen Flowers had informed the court that he would plead guilty to the charges. But he changed his mind after hearing the penalty, which is a minimum jail time of 2 years to a maximum of 5. The 4 accused will not be able to get bail through the Belize City Magistrate’s Court until 3 months from now. Alternately, they have 7 days to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.
