In this intensely hot month – however bad we think we have it
out there in the field gathering stories – when we return to our base
we’ve been able to put it into perspective when we look out at the men
and a few women who’ve been doing the hard labour preparing Albert Street
for the big paving. Its backbreaking work and it can be quite humdrum. That’s
why we took note today when one of the workers showed up with a giant sombrero
that says ‘Viva Mexico.’ Great way to inject some well needed humour
into what can be a grim affair and we asked him why he did it.
Construction Worker,
“This is a good thing for the sun right now, to prevent the sun from
hitting my body. I am doing cement construction work and it makes me work good
and thing so I am just wearing this hat to cool off the heat off my body.”
Jules Vasquez,
It doesn’t feel cumbersome when you are working, it doesn’t drop?
Construction Worker,
“No not really, it fits comfortably on my head. I could bend, I could
any kind of thing with it.”
Jules Vasquez,
You think you’re making a fashion statement on here?
Construction Worker,
“Yeah definitely, that’s right.”
Jules Vasquez,
Yuh boss noh complain or so?
Construction Worker,
“No not really, they would want me to get more hat to fit on the other
workman’s deh help.”
