The Flood Forecast
posted (October 23, 2008)

As you saw in the weather report earlier on, a tropical wave heading west will produce more rains across the country. And that forecast ahs been keeping the Belize Hydrology Unit busy. They have been monitoring water levels countrywide and in particular what has been happening on the Belize River as the flood wave gradually makes it way down. According to Chief Hydrologist Rudolph Williams at this time they cannot say whether or not the water will over-run the banks of the Belize River affecting the stretch of the Northern Highway between the Haulover Bridge and the entrance to the airport road, but they have been closely studying the situation.

Rudolph Williams, Hydrologist
“It is a possibility for that water to go over the highway. However at this time we have seen a slowing down of the wave which might possibly allow the water to get on past these areas without going over the banks. However we will not rule it out, we will keep monitoring it and making sure that we are on top of the situation so we can report it before it really becomes a crisis.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
How will the tropical wave heading towards Belize affect what’s happening right now?

Rudolph Williams,
“The tropical wave heading towards Belize is expected to put about 2 inches additional rainfall over the area. We expect the bulk of that to go into the northern part of the country however no area of the country is exempt from the rainfall. So what I have been looking at is that on Friday we are expecting increased water levels in the Belize City area. We are expecting that to occur late Friday early Saturday morning. In the south I am expecting that the causeway will become compromised again probably by Saturday afternoon. We expect that the people in the north will see an increase in water levels. As we know these two rivers are slow responders so we might see those response to be sometime probably on Saturday or Sunday.”

So far the flood has exceeded all gauges and all known records in many areas.
