Crown Counsels Resign from DPP's Office Because of Threats
posted (November 10, 2008)

Grant Schorn and Frances Turner they’re a pair of Canadian attorneys who’d come to Belize to work as crown counsels in the DPP’s office. The couple, husband and wife, are very experienced prosecutors, and were seen as a major addition to the DPP’s office. They had committed to work for a year, as they peeped in on real estate interests they had on San Pedro.

But three weeks after taking the job, Schorn and Frances have very suddenly left the DPP’s office – and it’s not because they didn’t like the job, but because their lives were threatened. That’s the story that was going around court today and when we called the DPP, Cheryl Lynn Branker Taitt, she confirmed that they have resigned.

Crown Counsel Turner claims that on Friday, a Creole descent man who was connected to an attempted murder case she was prosecuting made a direct threat on her life. That was all the couple needed to hear after seeing two witnesses shot the week before – one, Kevin Hendy, was killed – and seeing numerous other cases drop through because witnesses feared for their safety.

With all that, the couple put it in writing and in words to the DPP, and reportedly left the country this morning.
