Walla Shot Dead on South Street
posted (December 22, 2008)

A man was murdered in Belize City early on Saturday morning. He is 55 year old George Emmanuel Coffin – known as Walla. Police report he was walking near the corner of East Canal and South Street around 1 am when a young man armed with a gun approached him and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Walla in his right jaw and exited through the left. He made it to the Mesopotamia Sub-station where he collapsed. He was taken to the KHMH where he died on the operating table. The murder is as distressing as it is disturbing because Walla’s family since they can’t think of any reason why someone would want to kill him. His niece Louise McKenzie is still shocked.

Louise McKenzie, Niece
“I shocked because I know he is my last uncle left living and it really shocked me that he got shot. It made me get frightened and the whole day my pressure went right up. I still couldn’t believe.

He doesn’t interfere with nobody so I don’t see why they would want to kill him. He hustles his pints and go through the market and pickup things and sells to people and he buys his rum but as far as I know he doesn’t interfere with nobody.

I heard they just went up and shot him for no reason at all and most of the people who call me or tell me that why would they kill Walla – he doesn’t interfere with nobody. Why would they kill him. Everybody was shocked when he got shot because he is a person who does his own thing; hustle his bottle, and whatever he did. He bought his rum and came here to hangout. I just want justice serve and thing because this really bugs me especially at Christmas time.”

Jules Vasquez,
If you could speak to the young men who supposedly did this out of badness or idleness what would you say?

Louise McKenzie,
“How can you take a life, you can’t give life. I can’t do anything to him but i just want him to think about what he did. Maybe he pa, uncle, and what if someone came up and shot them just like that. You have to think nowadays because then it is somebody who we love dead. It is hard to lose a loved one like that for apparently no reason.”

A post mortem is scheduled for tomorrow. Walla had no children and no wife. Police believe the killer may be a much younger man.
