Orange Walk Residents Charged for Illegal Artefacts

With so many un-excavated, un-secured Mayan sites across Belize, it’s not hard for to find artefacts to sell, or to keep. 59 year old Orange Walk resident Carlos Betancourt has been charged for failing to produce license to possess or have in custody or control any ancient monument or antiquity.

Police report that when they searched Betancourt’s home on Nargusta Street in Orange Walk Town on Monday – they found 9 suspected Mayan artefacts. The Archaeology Department has since certified them to be 9 pieces of incensario fragments, one modified ceramic sherd and one obsidian flint.
