PM Dean Barrow Comments on Grenade Attack on Customs Comptroller's House
posted (March 10, 2009)

And while it is a police matter, the unprecedented attack is also a societal matter. The attack on the home of a senior public official is completely on another level. We discussed it with Gibson’s boss, the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
“There are two things. What this has done to him and his family, what it is doing to all of us as a society when a top public officer like that is confronted with that kind of a development, simply because he is honest and trying to run an honest department. We are heading down an extremely slippery slope. I have indicated to him and I have spoken to the Commissioner of Police that government will have to provide round the clock security for his premises. We are working that out logistically. I think he has some reservations, perhaps about the round the clock, but he has agreed to security, to stepped up security, and we’re going to put that in place.”

Jules Vasquez,
However is there a greater concern for the safety of all public officials?

Hon. Dean Barrow,
“I don’t think so because clearly Customs is in a special position. We all know what’s been happening in terms of the containers that have been coming through and the he has caught a number of them and he has taken steps to ensure that others wouldn’t get away and that clearly is responsible in one way or another.”
