Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-Jeou will be making his first official visit
to Belize from Wednesday to Friday of next week. On the ceremonial side, he’ll
be meeting all local leaders, and he will address a joint session of the National
Assembly on Thursday. And on the business side he will sign agreements for an
ICT Center in Belmopan City and host a press conference.
His two day stop in Belize is part of a tour of a number of Central American
countries as he makes his way to El Salvador for the inauguration of its new
President.
Taiwan is recognized by 23 countries, many of them concentrated on the Central
American isthmus. This is the 20th year of diplomatic relations between Belize
and Taiwan – and the dollar value in aid during that time would be difficult
to calculate – but the figure is huge.
