Tonight we report on the passing of a noted Belizean, Vernon Harrison Courtenay.
The 77 year old died at his home in the Ladyville area on Saturday after an
extended period of illness. Courtenay was an attorney, a successful politician
for the PUP and a statesman. He was appointed Belize’s first Attorney
General by the colonial government in 1970, and served variously as Minister
of Works, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Home Affairs. He was the
incumbent for the PUP in the Collet division after winning that seat three times
and served in the House Of Representatives from 1969 to 1984.
And while those achievements are considerable, most notably he was one of the
drafters of the Belize Constitution and Member of the team on the Belize Independence
Internationalization Process. Courtenay was interned was interned on Sunday
and an official memorial service will be held this Wednesday at 6:00 pm at St
Mary’s Church.
