This year’s September celebrations was kicked off where it all began 211 years ago – St. George’s Caye. The venue was 8 miles off the coast of Belize City coincided with the declaration of St. George’s Caye as a historical site and the official launch of this year’s celebrations. We’ll have the story on St. George’s Caye later but first to the celebrations. This year’s theme is: “diverse origins, common aspirations, together we celebrate as Belizeans.” It was submitted by Zelda Wade from Roaring Creek. The schedule of events was also released and NICH President Dianne Haylock gave us the highlights and unveiled the new celebrations logo.

Dianne Haylock, Co-Chair – September Celebrations Committee
“This year we have 28th year of independence Belize September celebrations 09 and 211 anniversary of the Battle of St. George’s Caye.

For me one of the things that I am very excited about is something we can a “pan yard” concert which is coming together of the four steel bands that are in Belize and they will be doing a concert, they will be doing a concert where each band will play for a period of time and then they are going to come together in a sort of symphonic conclusion.

There is going to be a concert by Frankie Reneau and students who have been participating in our Summer Art Institute in music. Of course the parade that everybody looks forward to each year is the carnival road march. So you do have a lot of usual things but I think we’ve been able to slip a couple new ones in there that will be somewhat different.”

Keith Swift,
“And where will the official Independence Day ceremonies held?”

Dianne Haylock,
“Absolutely it will be in Belmopan and I want to point out to people in Belize City that there will be a ceremony and parade in Belize City and that will be hosted by the Belize City Council.”

Keith Swift,
“So the uniform parade with all the students will be in Belize City?”

Dianne Haylock,
“It will be in Belize City. The students in Belmopan will participate there and the uniform section that involves the BDF and the Police, that will be in Belmopan.”

A full listing of events is on the September Celebrations Committee website.
