Elsworth Augustine Survives Execution Attempt
posted (September 7, 2009)

38 year old Elsworth Augustine is a food vendor and an easy going guy – not the kind of person who seems like a trouble-maker. But early this morning someone tried to kill him. Augustine lives in the long barracks on Sarstoon Street and he says that around 1 am he went to look for a cab to take his neighbour to the hospital. The neighbour’s baby had a high fever and like a good samaritan he left his home to help her out. He was shot while he was looking for that taxi. Augustine says he was on Vernon Street riding home when a red skinned man with a red hat began trailing him. He told us what happened next.

Elsworth Augustine, Shooting Victim
“He came with a vibe, like mek he get a weed. That time I was just riding. I didn’t want to study him because me and he dah no one. I was riding and riding trying to reach my destination because I already felt funny, I don’t mingle with those people to that extent and I didn’t expect that would ketch me same way but at that hour when he hauled up on me and me and him no familiar, I mi done feel a kind of way.

I mi wah jump off my bike but I said I will just ride. All I heard was pop and I feel something on me. I felt like a sensation like I got it and was still pedalling my bike and pedalling and a little amount of blood just came out of mouth and I said I got shot bad and I was riding trying to reach home. Same way when I reached by long barracks I set down the bike and I ran to the destination and I ran to gial and they asked me what gaan on and I told them I got shot and I started to spit out blood.

I don’t trouble nobody. I don’t bother nobody and thing, I try to help people and thing so I don’t understand this gang related with me because I don’t keep myself in that kind of life. I am somebody who tries to live positive because I see what those things could bring you down and thing. So I try keep far out of it but according to how it situate and how I am in this bed here, I was a victim of the situation.”

Elsworth Augustine has reason to feel lucky because even though he was shot in the back, it didn’t damage his spinal cord or any major organ. Police have made no arrests but say they are looking for a suspect who is known to them.
