American Businessman Fined $18,000
posted (September 18, 2009)

$18,000 - that is how much money American businessman Christopher Hysinger paid today for the death of Camalote mechanic Kenroy “Bobby” Peyrefitte.

Hysinger pled guilty yesterday to causing death by careless conduct. This morning Justice Adolph Lucas fined him $8,000 and in addition ordered him to pay Peyrefitte’s family $10,000 in compensation. The money had to be paid forthwith and Hysinger was additionally banned from driving in Belize for 3 years. In delivering his decision, Justice Lucas noted that there were no aggravating factors.

Hysinger was overtaking a bus on the Western Highway on April 20th of 2008 when his Prado crashed into a Toyota Corolla in which Peyrefitte was a passenger. Hysinger was originally charged with manslaughter by negligence but he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge yesterday after Justice Lucas rejected a no case submission made by his attorney Dean Lindo.

Hysinger we should note almost escaped prosecution after the charge was dismissed in Magistrate’s Court number 5 last year. The problem then was the case file couldn’t be located. The charges were reinstated and Hysinger was re-arrested just minutes before he was about to board a flight at the international airport.
