Johnny Briceno Joins Charlie Good Protest
posted (September 29, 2009)

Last night on this newscast, you head Easy Glen, the UDP activist who is Charlie Good’s son, say that the PUP was setting up his father, “like a puzzle.” Well today, for those who doubt Mr. Good’s motives a few more pieces of the puzzle fell into place as the Leader of the Opposition John Briceno showed up to hold the line with him for a few hours. 7News was there.

Keith Swift Reporting,
This morning PUP leader Johnny Briceno stood shoulder to shoulder with Charlie Good and his wife Hirian for photo ops on the protest line in front of the Battlefield Park The about 50 PUP supporters hoisted a Belizean flag in the air and party leader Johnny Briceno decried victimization.

Hon. Johnny Briceno, PUP Leader
“What best can we do on the anniversary of our party where it is a symbolic gesture to show that we are going back to the philosophical moorings of this party. Our party was started from the labour union. Many of the fights started right here at Battlefield Park in Belize City so I think it is very symbolic what we are doing here, standing up with Mr. and Mrs. Good the entire country can see that our party is prepared to stand up against the injustices that are taking place in this country.”

And while Briceno says his presence is symbolic, to some it makes the issue blatantly political.

Hon. Johnny Briceno,
“It is not blatantly political simply Mr. Good and Mrs. Good have been here for several weeks and we have deliberately stayed out because we did not want to make it political.”

Charlie Good, Protesting
“I wanna say Keith that I welcome everybody and anyone who supports us so to speak in our quest for justice. I welcome every and anybody who is supporting us. I even welcome the Prime Minister if he wants to come and join us to protest against our situation.”

Keith Swift,
“Some people might say you are jumping on Mr. Good’s bandwagon.”

Hon. Johnny Briceno,
“You know I find that it insulting for you to say something like that, that we are going to use somebody like Mr. Good who served this country for many many years as a BDF and he was out there in the jungles trying to protect all of us. I think you supposed to be standing here with Mr. Good to support his quest against a government that refuses to give justice. Mrs. Good was fired why? She had the highest recommendation from the own Ministry. The school is saying she did a great job, the parents are saying she did a great job, so why is it that she is going to be fired? You need to stand up here together with us to stand up and support Mrs. and Mr. Good.”

Charlie Good,
“In my case right now as I speak, we are down to two meals per day. But not only that we have bills, maybe I might get disconnected next month; electricity and water. Now please, I am not seeking pity and I am not seeking or begging for sympathy. I am telling it like it is.”

Good says he was surprised by his son Easy Glenn’s remarks last night but wasn’t shocked.

Charlie Good,
“At the end of the day, I would say he has his own choice and I have my mine. So I don’t want to go into any detail but I want to say nobody is paying us to be out here.

Keith Swift,
“Last night Easy Glen said that you are paying Mr. Good. Is that the case?”

Hon. Francis Fonseca, Freetown Area Rep.
“Absolutely not. I find that comment to be very disrespectful of Captain Good and his wife. Both are very good decent people and in fact I have stayed completely out of the matter just to avoid that very charge which I knew would come. I don’t like to get involved in fathers and sons. That is a very important relationship but I certainly think it is very disrespectful of Captain Good and his wife to suggest that somehow I would be able to manipulate their actions. That is certainly not the case, that is not certainly not the case and I have too much respect for them to even think of doing that.”

Keith Swift,
“Are you helping him out financially then?”

Hon. Francis Fonseca,
“Absolutely not.”

The goods have moved their protest across street from the Supreme Court and captain good says he will remain there –over night.

Charlie Good,
“We have been receiving prank calls, threatening calls, intimidation telephone calls about what they are going to do with us out here if we come out here and continue. Well I want to say to whoever is sending, same like how they sent the thugs the last time, I want to tell them and let me look into the camera, I want to tell whosoever is doing this I will be here today, I will be here tonight, and if God or with the grace of God and he gives me the strength, I will continue to be out here tomorrow.”

Briceno’s presence at the good protest was no small deal; he chose to be there instead of showing up as expected at the launch of Said Musa’s political memoirs. That event itself was no small deal and we’ll have a full review of it later.
