So while it’s far from over, politically, it’s just beginning.
You heard Mayor Moya’s raging words for her Party leader, Prime Minister
Dean Barrow. Well, the UDP issued a release this evening saying that, “the
party is saddened by new of charges being brought against one of its elected
officials but remained resolute in its commitment to held even our own accountable.
We expect that those charged will be afforded the full opportunity to prove
their innocence."
And while that’s the boilerplate political response, the important news
is this, that the National Party Council will be meeting on Saturday to consider
the ramifications of the charges and decide on any further course of action.
“Any further course of action” – what does it mean, what
can it mean? Well, we know that by her own will, the Mayor will not take a sabbatical
from office – in fact there’s no law that requires her to do so
and she is innocent until proven otherwise.
Some party sources however suggest that – particularly with Moya’s
biting criticism of the Party Leader – that consideration of an expulsion
form the party could be included in those further courses of action. But we
stress that has not been formally tabled, it’s just one of those things
that’s being bantered about by party hardliners.
Of course, the wildcard in this is Michael Finnegan, the man known as the party
whip. He’s Mayor Moya’s staunchest defender, and a party General
with senior standing – but nothing’s been heard from him because
he’s out of the country. He returns next week and at that time it will
be interesting to hear where he comes down on this dicey, internally explosive
issue.
