Taxi Driver Shot on Cairo Street
posted (October 7, 2009)

A man was shot yesterday evening on Cairo Street. It was breaking news last night and tonight we have more details. He has been identified as Jason Cain and he had just parked his car in front of his home when a gunman ambushed him. We were on the scene.

Keith Swift Reporting,
Last night Cairo Street was cordoned off as a crime scene as police marked the expended shells on the streets and counted the bullet holes left in the door of Jason Cain’s white Ford Escort. Neighbours, none of whom would speak on camera, say the gunshots rang out shortly after 6 on Cairo Street.

Voice of Area Resident
“I mi deh inna my house and I heard like five to six shots.”

Voice of Eyewitness,
“I was talking to my sister and thing and all of a sudden I just heard gunshots and I told her to stay inside the house and just waited until everything stopped and then I peeped out to see what was going on.”

And when they did look outside - they found this white Ford Escort Wagon with the engine still on and with the wipers in motion. In the driver’s seat of the car was the car’s owner Jason Cain slumped over the steering wheel.

Voice of Eyewitness,
“I saw the man in the vehicle. I called the police and they came to assist and so we got the guy out of the vehicle and get him to the hospital quickly because he was still breathing and I talked to him and he said he is alright and thing but in his foot he got shot. He had to the chest too but I talked to him and he said he feels okay but I am not sure as that but we will know. The car engine was rolling.”

The shooting has left one resident shaken.

Keith Swift,
“When you heard the shots what did you think was happening?”

Voice of Area Resident,
“Somebody was just firing up shots in the air as usual. I didn’t know it was somebody they shot.”

Keith Swift,
“So that is a normal occurrence around here?”

Voice of Area Resident,
“It is normal occurrence in Belize. I feel bad, I don’t feel safe in this place. This is supposed to be our Belize but our Belize turn out into something else.

Jason Cain is listed in a critical condition in the hospital. Police say they have detained a 25 year old man and a 16 year old minor.
