Not Your Grandfather's Game
posted (October 7, 2009)

In the hope of getting more players of all ages involved in the sport of playing chess the Belize National Youth Chess Foundation will be holding the first of its kind Belize Educators Chess Symposium on October tenth. Guest speaker will be the International Chess Grand Master Maurice Ashley who through his messages hopes to get people to recognize that using chess as an educational and motivational tool will improve life and learning skills to children between the ages of nine and twelve years old.

Chess Grand Master Maurice Ashley,
“It is quite a universal game and if you really investigate it you will see that it’s not the game that your grandfather used to play. It is now a very modern game that everyone loves to play and now you do it with computers, it is just tremendous to see the variety that chess brings in terms of the people who play. My message is first and foremost is that chess helps kids succeed and I will be talking about the changes chess made in my life and in the lives of kids I have coached over the last 20 years and the difference it can make here in Belize.”

The chess symposium takes place this Saturday on October tenth at the George Price Centre in Belmopan. It gets underway from nine thirty in the morning. If you would like to attend you can register by sending an email to Ella Anderson at Belizechess@cavesbranch.com.
