Police Refused to Help Shooting Victim
posted (October 26, 2009)

Imagine getting shot multiple times, running for help to the nearest police station and getting no help at all. That is what eighteen year old Mark Lord and his family are claiming happened in Belize City around noon on Sunday. According to Mark Lord he and a friend were walking in the vicinity of Princess Hotel and Casino late on Sunday morning when they were stopped by a police mobile patrol.

Reports are the young men were stopped because the police claimed they saw Mark Lord throw something away. The family says Mark Lord was then put into the police vehicle but instead of taking him to the station for questioning he was driven to the city’s southside and let out on George Street. The family interprets that as deliberately putting him in harm’s way.

And, sure enough, harm, or more like mortal danger was lurking nearby. Lord walked from George Street to the city’s north side to an area by Hyde’s Lane. It was only a short distance from the Queen Street Police Station but that did not stop two young gun men in bikes from holding up Mark Lord and shooting him five times.

He somehow survived and is in the hospital recovering. But Lord who did not wish to show his face on camera told us what happened and how the police although noticing that he had been shot several times and bleeding did not help him.

Mark Lord, Shooting Victim
“I approached the Hyde’s Lane, two young men were by the alley I was going through and they asked me whe gaan on. They pulled out a gun and asked me whe gaan ahn and I tell di man whe gaan ahn with you and then the man tell me this gaan ahn and the man shot me inna my left hand and then after that I started to struggle with him and then he shot me again and then the next one come from behind and then shot me in my chest and I tek the next one and slammed him against and then I run gaan by the station.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“Because you were literally in stone’s throw, you very close to the police station. When you go to the police station what happened?”

Mark Lord,
“I tell deh I need help, I just get shot and everybody just stay right inna di station and watch pon me. Nobody came out and helped me.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“They must have saw you bleeding, they must have seen the gunshots.”

Mark Lord,
“They just watch pon me, nobody come to help me.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“How did you finally make it over to the KHMH?”

Mark Lord,
“Same time my cousin pa mi di pass and I flagged him down and he dropped me yah at the hospital.”

Delthrude Hylton, Cousin of Shooting Victim
“What really disturbs me is the first crew that pick him which is Sergeant Chun and his crew. They picked him up from Princess and they took him to the other side of town when they should have taken him to the police station. I don’t believe that when a police officer are doing their work they should do something out of the ordinary. If you pick me up you are supposed to take me to the station, charge me with whatever, or hold me for prevention of crime or whatever you choose to.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“But why was he picked up?”

Delthrude Hylton,
“They believe that they saw him throw away something and then they stopped him, searched him, and it wasn’t him alone, it was him and his friend. They searched them, they searched the area, and they didn’t find anything and they took him alone and left his friend behind. They took him across town and left him in George Street area. When he was coming back over and he got shot, he ran to the police station for assistance. They are the people that are supposed to protect us. If I run to them because somebody is injuring me or about to injure me, then I believe I should be protected by these people. So are we supposed to run to for protection? That is what I need to know. I want them to give me answers as to why they didn’t render assistance to him.”

Mark Lord,
“I got shot in my hand and my chest.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“And what are the doctors saying, they expect you to recover?”

Mark Lord,
“Yes mam. They say just one of my lungs collapsed, my left lung.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“Do you know why they wanted to kill you?”

Mark Lord,
“No mam because I nuh have nothing with none of them.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“You know them though?”

Mark Lord,
“I know them.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“And when you say deh mi di tell you this dah fi whe gaan on, what supposed to have gaan on?”

Mark Lord,
“I nuh know. I asked him whe gaan ahn and he tell me dah this gaan ahn and same time he pulled out the gun and I just heard bow and I feel I get shot in mi hand and from then I just started to struggle with him.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“You must have been shocked when you ran to the police station with obvious gunshot injuries to your body, obviously bleeding, and the cops there not willing to help. What went through your mind?”

Mark Lord,
“Nothing. I tell them I di blackout and nobody came out until I see my cousin pa come and he asked me dah whe gaan on and I told him I just get shot and dah he drop me dah hospital.”

Following our interview with the shooting victim and his family they told 7News that they will be making an official complaint to the police.
