posted (October 30, 2009)

A Belizean has been busted with 36 thousand counterfeit pesos in Mexico. The Diario de Quintana Roo reports that on Wednesday, 19 year old Manuel Eduardo Martinez – a Belizean national from Corozal and 39 year old Javier Martinez Vidal – a resident of Quintana Roo attempted to pay for services at the Hotel Ucum.

When Mexican State Police arrived, they learnt that the duo had allegedly paid for the services of a prostitute with 800 counterfeit pesos. The pair led police to their hotel room where they found 98 – two hundred pesos bills, 36 – five hundred pesos bills, 4 Belizean five dollar bills, and 20 Belize dollars. The newspaper reports the men confessed.

Martinez furthermore allegedly told police that he bought the money in the Corozal Free Zone. He said he paid one Jose Luis $4,000 Belize dollars in exchange for the counterfeit pesos. The men were detained pending charges of counterfeit. In Mexico that is a crime punishable to up to 15 years in jail.

Of interest are reports that Vidal was allegedly charged in the December 2008 murder plot against the Shoman family. Those are unconfirmed as his name does not come up but he may be using an alias. The man alleged to be the mastermind in that conspiracy was recently granted bail.
