A woman in the United States has been indicted on nine counts of human smuggling.
Why is that news in Belize? Well according to a report by United Press International,
the accused identified as fifty two year old Guyanese national Annita Devi Gerald
also known as Annita Rampersad fraudulently obtained Belizean visas for four
Indian nationals she helped to smuggle into the United States between April
2009 to November seventeenth, 2009.
Furthermore the investigations reveal that while the Indian nationals were
in Belize waiting to be smuggled into the US, Gerald allegedly provided them
with a place to stay while arrangements were made. Annita Devi Gerald allegedly
aided the Indians by escorting them from India to Belize and then to other countries
in Central and South America.
On November seventeenth she was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Special Agents in Houston and since then has been held without bond. On December
seventeenth Devi Gerald was indicted by the US Justice Department. She has been
charged with four counts of encouraging and inducing aliens to come to the United
States for profit, and four counts of bringing aliens to United States for profit.
