If you’re a Belize City resident – you know that Li Chee
is the most popular fried chicken joint in town. And indeed, it’s not
just a fry chicken shop – it is a part of this seamy city’s culture
and now thanks to a new song it’s a part of pop culture. Keith Swift has
the story.
DJ Kad Rapping: “What me a eat…what me a eat….Li
Chee the best fry chicken inna Belize City mi seh Li Chee.”
That catchy hook about this popular fast food restaurant has made 18 year old
Kadeem Gentle into somewhat of an overnight celebrity.
Kadeem Gentle, Deejay/Rapper
“I surprise that people like it so much and they have it as their
ring tone and are asking me for it and things like that. The song is just an
idle song when we just were chilling and the original song was playing and we
were just talking fool and we came up with the idea and right so the song got
built.”
Keith Swift,
“Are you surprise about the reaction to it?”
Kadeem Gentle,
“I am surprised because it is not something we intentionally did and
we weren’t looking forward for it to get big. It is just out of idleness
and we just did it and boom it get big.”
And now Kadeem has gone from behind the computer in the Firestorm Studio where
he records and mixes his beats to in front of the mic.
Kadeem Gentle,
“I rather deejay, this singing thing is just like out of the idleness
and it is not nothing which I planned but I will just try to do something with
it and see how far I can reach with it.
I just see myself the just not really going anywhere big yet but just trying
to make it out of Belize and get the exposure outside of Belize.”

Kadeem Gentle,
“Well I eat two of them. I don’t really choose sides so when
people see me on the street or see me at Kickdown the buy chicken they would
holler bwoy what are you doing buying Kickdown, you say you eat Li Chee. I tell
them bwoy me eat anyone, the song doesn’t mean nothing.”
