5 Inmates Escape from Central Prison
posted (April 12, 2010)

There was another murder this weekend – on Roaring Creek were a 15 year old was murdered. We’ll have that shortly, but first, disturbing news about 5 men who’ve escaped from the Central Prison. It happened very early this morning just after midnight when the five inmates got out of their cell at the Tango 10 building. According to an official release from Kolbe, they breached the security systems and overpowered the Prison Officer. Now, that should come as no surprise to the prison as our records show that all of these me have escaped before.

The five are as follows: 30 year old Terry Bainton, who according to our records has escaped at least twice – the most recent case in October of last year. Bainton was serving time for buglary and escape. And then there’s 35 year old Dennis Quilter, who is also serving time for burglary and escape. He has also escaped at least twice before and is widely known as an escape artist. The last time he escaped in 2007 – he got all the way to the United States and was only recaptured two years later. Then there is 30 year old Jose-Luis Cocom, he only escaped once before – not surprisingly, it was in 2009 with Bainton. He is serving time for maim.

It is much the same case for 22 year old Jose Melgar who also escaped with Bainton in 2009. He is serving time for aggravated burglary. And these veteran escapees have recruited a newcomer to their club, 45 year old Juan Melendez, who is also on the run with them.

So where are the escapees believed to have gone? And who should be on the lookout? Well, the increasingly mute Police Press Office has issued no statement or public advisory and the Prison Department has only sent out the bare details and photos. Anyone sighting any of these 5 is asked to call the Belize Central Prison at 225-6229 or 225-6191 with information regarding the sighting or identification.
