Jewett in Jail

An American man arrested last December in Belize on money laundering charges who turned out to be a US fugitive, wanted in the US for gun charges pleaded guilty last week in US courts to firearms possession and failure to appear in court. The 36 year old, convicted felon, William Jewett fled the United States sometime the end of last year and made his way to Belize in his sailboat, Latitude Adjustment. Jewett was busted in Belize after local authorities discovered a large sum of cash totalling Three Hundred and Eighty Five thousand dollars stashed in his boat which was anchored at the Cucumber Beach Marina at Old Belize on the Western Highway. He was fined Fifty Thousand dollars and his assets were forfeited by the court under the provisions of the Belize Money Laundering and Terrorism Prevention Act. Jewett who was subsequently expelled from the country is awaiting sentencing in Mobile, Alabama where he faces minimum prison time of anywhere from Three to Eleven years.
