The Import of Ports
posted (May 5, 2010)

Dozens of delegates representing Port Authorities from countries around the World are meeting at the Belize Biltmore Hotel for three days this week to participate in the Thirty Second Central American Port forum, being hosted by the Belize Port Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Utilities, N.E.M.O. and Transport and Communications.    Much of the three day agenda will focus on common problems of port authorities and operators of the region, as well as dealing with the establishment of policies, strategies, experience sharing and cooperation amongst its members.  Belize's active participation in this forum reflects the country's growing acceptance of its strategic role and place in the Central American isthmus.

Otto Noack, Executive Director, COCATRAM
"We see Belize as a part of Central America, we see Belize as part of the Meso American countries, and we see Belize as part of the region that for us is real important.  Doesn’t matter how big or small are its port facilities, we have to be integrated because, alone, we cannot do anything, we need to be integrated to present this region to the rest of the world."

Jim McFadzean
"And with the integration of Belize in the wider Mesoamerica will come an increasing trade and an increasing need for port facilities and their operations, am I right?â€￾

Otto Noack, Executive Director, COCATRAM

"The sea is a way to transport, and Belize is in the middle of the region, so Belize also has a very large coast facilities with a beautiful touristic destination. Cue out:…07:04.. They need to be a part of this initiative."

The forum also promotes the realization of uniform policies for improvement and modernization of Central American Ports facilities in order to achieve efficiency and competitiveness in the new global scenario.  The event is held once a year and the hosting is rotated amongst the Central American countries.  Tomorrow the final day of the meeting will address the  maritime and environmental impact the ports have on countries of the region.
