World Oceans Day On Goff’s Caye
posted (June 7, 2010)
World Ocean Day is observed worldwide tomorrow, June 8th. In an effort to promote awareness and appreciation for the diversity of Belize's marine life, marine conservationists planned a one-day trip to Goff's Caye on Saturday for over a hundred junior college students and other stakeholders. Colin Gillett told us why awareness is equated with ownership.

Colin Gillett - Director CZMAI
"World Ocean Day is the reason we're out here. We've been working with the Healthy Reefs Initiative, WWF, Oceana and we're all trying to push the appreciation for the ocean this year. We have different activities that we're putting forth what we've done is try to incorporate a lot of, ah, new schools and different sectors of the community we have a group from Youth For The Future, we have a group from St. Ignatius, we have the Scout Association and all these groups we think is vital to pushing the word out, that management is the key and a lot of them who have never been to an island this is a great experience for them "

Tomorrow the folks at the Coastal Zone Office will be hosting an Open-Day for primary school students. This year's theme is "Oceans of Life".
