posted (June 8, 2010)
And while all this hubbub about adverse oil exploration played out on world oceans day - really it's an opportunity for people across the globe to celebrate the oceans and appreciate their value.

Here in Belize, those in charge of planning events began celebrating from this past weekend with a one day trip to Goff's Caye. Today, they continued the festivities with an open day for primary school students and announcing the winners of a poster competition. 7 News was there as Standard 5 student Takaki Yanai won first place.

Takaki Yanai
"I got the inspiration from my teacher, my art teacher, and I love to paint. I'm really curious about marine life, and I think this was a good thing to do. This paint contest was really good."

Emaun Hyde
"Did you have any help with your artwork?"

Takaki Yanai
"Yes I got a lot of help from my principal and mostly my art teacher."

Emaun Hyde
"Did you expect yourself to do so well in the competition; I mean you came out first. Did you hope to do so well?"

Takaki Yanai
"Yeah"

Emaun Hyde
"What did you win today?"

Takaki Yanai
"I won a two hundred dollars for the, first prize."

Emaun Hyde
"What do you plan to do with the money?"

Takaki Yanai
"I would say that I plan to buy ice cream for my art teacher, and my friends in the club, the art club."

Emaun Hyde
"Where do you think Takaki got the inspiration from to do his artwork?"

Fiona Huang
"He likes the oceans, and he likes the fish."

Emaun Hyde
"Does he paint this well in your art class?"

Fiona Huang
"Yes"

Emaun Hyde
"What is the purpose of the poster competition?"

Chantalle Clarke
"The poster competition is in conjunction with activities that we are having to observe world oceans day today. We had several activities over the weekend, which included a trip to Goff's Caye where we took Junior College level students out to the Caye to engage in different marine activities. Today our focus is on the primary school students, and we sent out different notices to all the primary schools in Belize City inviting them to participate in the poster competition under the theme "Oceans of Life".

Emaun Hyde
"Did you guys have a lot of participation from students across the country?"

Chantalle Clarke
"Yes, we did. We got a lot of entries and it was very difficult to sift through all of them. At the end of the day, we used several judging criteria and we were able to pick the top five, and the top three got prizes today."

Emaun Hyde
"Are you happy about the turn out of the open day and of all the events that you guys have been having?"

Chatalle Clarke
"I am extremely happy and pleased that schools in Belize are on track with the stuff that we're doing, and that they wanted to come and participate in the activities that we are having today."

Emaun Hyde
"How do you think the students benefited from participating and coming to the open day?"

Chantalle Clarke
" I think the students definitely benefited. For most of them, marine issues are out of sight and out of mind. Unfortunately, it is not always incorporated as a part of the primary school curriculum, so today was an added benefit for them to come in, learn about what we do and our partners, who we invited from Ecomar, and to watch a video. "

The second place winner, Eran Jones took home 100 dollars, while the third place winner, Liny Mauricio took home 50.
