Guinea Grass Transfers Suspect Says Minister
posted (June 21, 2010)
Last week we took you to Guinea Grass village in the Orange Walk district where a group of parents were protesting to have the principal removed. While they had quite a number of issues, the bottom line was that 5 teachers were being transferred, supposedly against their will and supposedly because they are UDP's and the deputy school manager is a PUP. The Deputy school manager denied it, but today the Minister Of Education said that his ministry does need to look at the transfers:....

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
"All I would do at this time is to ask the management to remember that there are rules that govern how a teacher should be transferred. For instance Guinea Grass and this is just my preliminary look at it I have not study the situation in detail but if there are teachers who reside in Guinea Grass and you are transferring them to work in Orange Walk town for instance, the rules are clear on that. That you must first try to make sure that people are working in the area that they live. In others words you don't teachers from Guinea Grass and transfer them to Orange Walk and bring teachers from Orange Walk to Guinea Grass. That is against the rules for transfer, furthermore you don't transfer a teacher because that teacher is a discipline problem. If you are not satisfied with something a teacher did you cannot just transfer them, you don't transfer a problem you deal with the problem. And in addition you don't transfer a teacher for non-performance, that's again something that you don't do. The rules are very clear on these things. So that if we look at the situation after the Catholic management has dealt with it and we see where the rules of transfers have not been followed that the ministry will act on that."

The School management has slated the transfers to take effect in the next school year....
