"This was the veranda railing that 20 year old Stacy Kerr fell from on June 5th".

The fall was less than 5 feet but it cost Kerr her life. According to her mother - doctors say chances of a freak accident such as this happening must be one in a million.

Maria Kerr - Mother
"Stacey was talking ever since she came in the hospital she was talking. She confirms that it was a playful/freak accident. The doctors said that one in a million would drop and get this kind of hurt but Stacey was just the bad-luck one to get hurt this way."

The incident took place on June 5th in Burrell Boom Village. Stacy and her boyfriend Germaine Pook were at their home and had just finished throwing a party. It is believed the couple was outside playing around when they both fell off the veranda of their bungalow house. Stacy had broken her neck in three places and was paralyzed from the arms downwards.

Maria Kerr
"She broke her neck and her c4, c5 and c6 was damaged. From the beginning they said it was like a 50/50 chance we were just praying and hoping for the best. She actually had to be rush in for an emergency surgery where they had to align her manually Doctors Ryon and Nunez, her doctors at the KHMH did a wonderful job where they brought her back. They did everything they could on her alignment. The x-ray show that it was so perfect, it seems that she never had it broken. Stacey was transferred from the surgical ward to the ICU, she was then treated by the nurses around the clock. Doctors were there, Dr. Higaldo, Dr. Godinez and Dr. Sosa from Medical Associates. We had a lot of doctors who were very much attentive of her. They took very good care of her."

On Saturday, Stacy - who was also an asthmatic - starting having trouble breathing.

Maria Kerr
"3:30 the evening she started having problem breathing. I was there with her, whenever I was allowed in the room she would tell me 'mommy I can't breathe' and the nurses were so gentle, they came and they took care of her the best way they could. The doctors administered everything they could, all the medication they could give her and Stacey was a fighter, she will always be remember as the girl that have everything and did everything and my daughter is with God."

Stacy Kerr succumbed to her injuries a little after 6 o'clock on Sunday morning. Today her mother believes it was a miracle her daughter even survived 15 more days of life and thanks everyone who kept Stacy in their prayers.

Maria Kerr
"Stacey survived her injuries for 15 days by the grace of God. It was a miracle she made it for 15 days but as far as I am concerned God knows why, she saw all her friends and her family members. Everybody prayed and people from all over the world heard her story and we prayed. Even people that we didn't even know"

Rumours of domestic violence being the cause of Stacy's fall has been going around the community and Marie Kerr says she would like to set the record straight that this was an innocent accident and her son-in-law did nothing wrong.

Maria Kerr
"I would like to tell all the people that are talking nonsense that's best if you can't say anything good then don't say anything at all. We are all hurting at this point. They don't know how much it hurts, maybe some people do, but at this point Germaine Pook was the love of her life and it could happen to anybody out there."

This afternoon a post-mortem examination was done of Stacy Kerr which stated the young woman died from Acute Pulmonary Edema which means fluid in the lungs. Reporting for 7 News, Monica Bodden.
