Picture Perfect Summer Camp
posted (July 7, 2010)
At this time of year summer camps abound, but today we found a very special one - it teaches photography, to kids! The Belize Audubon Society began today with a two day photography course for children under 17, who want to learn the fundamentals of picture taking. We were there as they told us why they felt it was important.

Emaun Hyde
"Why did you feel to have a summer camp like this teaching kids how to take pictures, most parents wouldn't even trust their kids holding their camera."

Dirk Francisco, Photography Instructor
"Well, that's the truth, but there are some too who buy their kids cameras, and you know kids, to me I believe that if you know about a camera you would take better care of it, and many people don't want to use something that is so valuable so the Belize Audubon Society see it as an opportunity to teach because for myself it is a hobby a serious hobby, I am always taking photographs and I am always willing to share my skill and talent with anyone how is willing."

Emaun Hyde
"What are your hopes for all your students'?"

Dirk Francisco
"My hope is that, all of these children in here become great photographers, they become great story tellers, I want them to be ambassadors of Belize, I want them to appreciate Belize for what it is and also tell stories to other Belizeans and foreigners about the beauty of Belize through photography."

Erei Palacio, Student
"When my dad first told me about it, I was very excited to go because I always love to go take pictures and remember things. Yes when I was little I use to sneak the camera and take pictures sometimes."

Emaun Hyde
"Are you enjoying your summer camp?"

Erei Palacio
"Very much, it's very fun, taking pictures learning."

Emaun Hyde
"What all are you learning?"

Erei Palacio
"About like that kind of cameras and I didn't really know that pictures could tell you so many things."

Kaitlynne Haylock, Student
"I decided to come to the summer camp because when my mom told me about I wanted to know to take better pictures of the natural resources because I was just starting and they didn't come out so good. So then I am learning how to take pictures of natural resources soon."

Emaun Hyde
"By the end of the class, you think you will be a better photographer?"

KaitlynneHaylock
"Yes."

Emaun Hyde
"Are you enjoying it?"

Kaitlynne Haylock
"Yes."

BAS is hosting other summer activities such as Jungle and Cave Adventure Camp, Photography Camp for Adults, Crooked Tree Nature Trails Camp, and a Crystal Cave Couples Camp.
