Ernesto Perez Succumbs
posted (July 8, 2010)
On the morning of June 28, Ernesto Perez was targeted for execution as he pulled up to the corner of Rivero and Fairweather Streets. A vehicle was tailgating him, and he pulled over to let it pass, but as the driver pulled up and someone in the passenger seat opened fire.

Perez was shot in the face and back - but he survived. We'd been following up on his progress and hear encouraging news - even though a pinched nerve left him unable to walk, and a shattered jaw left him unable to talk.

But he was alive and improving until yesterday when his condition suddenly worsened. His common law wife - who asked to appear off camera for her own family's safety spoke to us this evening:...

Jules Vasquez
"We know that he was shot in the face around the jaw area, we haven't heard from him in a while and we though he had make it."

Voice of Common-Law-Wife
"I thought so too, he was going to make it because on Tuesday he was all upbeat making jokes in the hospital, having all the nurses in the hospital laughing and making fun. So he was really looking up so everybody believes that he was going to make it. Minutes to seven when I got there, normally when I go in and open the door he would light up and then he would blink his eyes 3 times; that means I love you. And he was paying any mind, I walk around the other side of the bed and I ask him 'what happen' I notice he wasn't exactly focusing and start looking around in the place and I ask him 'what's wrong' he said 'I can't see' I ask him 'what do you mean you can't see,' what color blouse i have on? He said he can't see. I had just walk out of the room to call the nurse and when I came back I see his head and eyes turn backwards. The nurse told me to please leave the room and I went back inside. When I went back inside the doctor had him hook up to something and he say that he doesn't look good. Then I decided to call his family because he was just lying there."

Jules Vasquez
"He died at 4 this morning am I correct?"

Voice of Common-Law-Wife
"No, 2:35 a.m."

Jules Vasquez
"Do you have any idea what happen if he had been doing so well and then suddenly took a dive. The doctors have any explanation?"

Voice of Common-Law-Wife
"No, not really, the only thing I had to say was that he give up. He just give up because he was paralyze from the waist down and he wasn't moving, he was a very proud person."

Jules Vasquez
"See if you can trace it back to that morning. He was driving somebody pull up and shot him on the side here. Do you have any idea who would have done that and why?"

Voice of Common-Law-Wife
"I don't know, honestly I don't know."

Jules Vasquez
"Do you think because he was driving Raymond's (Killa) car?"

Voice of Common-Law-Wife
"Honesty I guess, I don't know. The only explanation I have is I say wrong car, wrong place."

Jules Vasquez
"Is it anger that you feel? Is it sorrow of the lost? its unimaginably for us but how do you get through this?"

Voice of Common-Law-Wife
"My family, I have my family and I have faith, my family is there for me 100%. Anger? No. I feel sorry for them. Why I feel sorry for them? Because they will see God's face and all I am asking these young guys out here; hey we are all Black, we are all brothers; one in God's eye. It's not red and blue and black and brown. We are all human beings, love one and other, lets us love one and other and learn to get on with each other. We don't want any revenge because what will it hope to achieve, it doesn't make any sense and that what he wanted and I told all his friends he doesn't want any revenge. He just wanted peace."

Perez was the father of five children, two of them his own, and three step children. He had told his common law wife that after this he definitely wanted to go back to his home country in Honduras.

The family says they have to thank the staff at the KHMH as well as the Kraal Road Crew who has been taking care of them throughout the ordeal.

When Perez was shot he was driving the vehicle owned by Kraal Road boss Ramond Killa Gentle.
