As we reported last night, 5 year old Melissa Cruz died from dengue hemorrhagic on Tuesday at the KHMH. Her death becomes the first attributed to dengue hemorrhagic in Belize, As you heard, the family blames the health system for not having blood ready when the hemorrhaging child needed a transfusion.
And what does the system have to say? Well, not a whole lot. The director of health services would not return our calls today and the ministry press officer told us there would be no official statement issued at this time.
The KHMH did issue a statement late this evening. It doesn't say much other than that the Hospital Administration sympathizes with the family. Showing a firm grasp of the obvious, the release calls it "an unexpected death."
It closes by saying that "the hospital, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health is pursuing a thorough review of the facts leading up to the death of Melissa Cruz."
The findings - we are told - will be disclosed as soon as it is concluded.
