Last night - just as the news as getting started - the entire nation was plunged into a blackout.
Well it's not only us - it happened in parts of Quintana Roo, Mexico as well.
BEL says their Mexican supplier, CFE lost power supply to its 230 kV transmission line, which resulted in a collapse of its system and a trip on Belize's National Grid.
Power was restored to Central and Northern Belize by 7:15 p.m. and to all other areas of the country by 7:25 p.m., except for that area along the Northern Highway from Los Lagos to Crooked Tree.
Power to these areas was lost at 6:00 p.m., after a car crashed into a utility pole in the Ladyville area.
And while that was disruptive but mercifully short, a blackout scheduled for Sunday promises to be monumental.
If you haven't seen the ad on every newscast and in every newspaper, we're reminding you that on Sunday the entire Belize district from Belize City to the Belize River Valley Area will have a blackout.
BEL says it's necessary for maintenance works on the distribution and transmission systems in the area.
And as you're getting over that inconvenience there's another. The City Council is closing down the Belcan Bridge and before you head out into the rush you should know which detour to take. Counselor Phillip Willoughby told us more.

"What construction work will be getting done on the bridge?"

"Technically speaking like I said I am not certain, but I know that heavy equipments will come into assist in the repairs to the bridge that needs to be done urgently."

"So what advice do you have to drivers who will be inconvenience by the road blocks?"
Phillip Willougby
"Well, first of all the bridge that will be close will be the Belcan bridge, it will be on Monday July 19th from 9 am to 11 am, streets that will be blocked off to facilitate the works, are on the north side the roundabout approaching the Belcan bridge, south side Central American Boulevard, which intercepts with Mahogany Street, St. Jude Street and Peter Seco Street, so any inconvenience caused we are very sorry for that, regrettably but again urgent work, maintenance needs to be done on the Belcan bridge at this time."
The bridge will be closed from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday.
